SANBS needs donors this Easter | News Article

SANBS needs to collect 3500 units of blood daily in order to meet the demand for blood from hospitals across the country. SANBS is currently aiming at building blood stock levels before the challenging Easter period.

SANBS would like to call upon donors to donate blood now in order to maintain a sufficient blood supply before Easter.

Most people are probably aware of the huge demand for blood over the Easter period due to the amount of road accidents. However, there are many patients in need of blood transfusions daily for cancer treatment, trauma, childbirth and gynaecological cases, paediatric cases, surgeries, and more. With the upcoming school holidays, and many planning to go away on holiday, SANBS is aiming to increase the blood supply available in order to meet the required demand.

Mid-Morning Magic's Yolanda Maartens spoke to Refiloe Tsotetsi, Donor Relations Practitioner at the Klerksdorp Donor Centre, about the significant demand for blood SANBS faces daily.

SANBS currently needs all South Africans who are able to, to visit their nearest Donor Centre or mobile blood drive to donate blood. They appreciate all blood donors who remain steadfast in their commitment to saving lives. They would like to encourage the regular blood donors to continue giving the gift of life. Donors who have not donated blood in a while, are encouraged to donate again. New blood donors, from as early as 16 years old, are encouraged to register to become blood donors. It only takes 30 minutes, three to four times a year.

When blood is donated, a single whole blood donation may help as many as three patients.  Each unit of blood can be separated into its various components – red cells, plasma and platelets – and given to patients with different needs.

O-negative is known as the universal blood type, as it is compatible with all other blood types and is used for emergency transfusions. Group O is very much needed over the Easter period due to the amount of emergency situations.
