The North West MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha, has lashed out at health workers who are participating in the strike of the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu).

Sambatha said the department has reflected on incidents of intimidation, blocking of entrances at health facilities and damage to property across the province.

He said that the department views these acts as criminal because the continued Nehawu strike is illegal.

"Health care is an essential service, sometimes a matter of life and death. To have patients restricted from accessing health services is irresponsible and dangerous to the lives of our people.

"I am therefore calling all our employees to be responsible and refuse to participate in any illegal and unprotected strike."

Sambatha says the department will take decisive action against workers participating in the strike. He also called on law enforcement agencies to intervene and take action against any violent acts and intimidation reported to them to ensure the safety of patients, employees and state property.
