The MEC for the Department of Health in North West, Madoda Sambatha, has outlined plans to renovate over 40 health facilities each year.

Speaking at the Legislature sitting held in Ngaka Modiri Moleme under the programme "Taking Legislature to the People", Sambatha explained the department's plans to build a state-of-the-art facility that will cater to the Tswaing and Ratlou municipalities.

According to Sambatha, the department has budgeted R170 million to upgrade the Motswedi Clinic into a community healthcare centre, and has also changed the method of procuring ambulances to accommodate the growing population.
"The provincial government has pronounced that each year we will renovate 44 clinics. Those clinics that need upgrades and improvements, we'll include them in that 44. The second decision is that each year we will upgrade 10 clinics to operate 24 hours [a day]."

Sambatha said that if a clinic is currently operating for eight hours with six nurses, when it stretches the hours to 24, it will operate with 18 nurses. Sambatha also admitted that the department has a shortage of ambulances but that the department has plans in place to address the issue.
