A 58-year-old Free State woman charged with 1116 counts of theft in connection with theft of millions of rands was found guilty by the Specialised Commercial Crime Court sitting in Sasolburg this week.

Mareli Vogel was arrested in September 2021 after a case was opened against her at Sasolburg SAPS in January 2020 for stealing R2 500 000 from a company she worked for.

According to the Hawks provincial spokesperson, Fikiswa Matoti, the owner of the business was notified by ABSA bank on 24 December 2019 about the alleged theft.

The bank notified the owner of the unnamed business after a large amount of cash was withdrawn from his business account. Matoti says an internal investigation was conducted by the business owner and it was discovered Vogel had made huge transfers of money to her personal account between 2014 and 2020.

"Vogel is due to appear in the Bethlehem Regional Court for sentencing on 1 June. As we await the sentencing, the Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, applauded the sterling work done by the investigation and prosecution team," Matoti added.
