North West Legislature discusses criminal cases against officials | News Article

A member of the North West Legislature said opening criminal cases is the only way to bring corrupt government officials to book.

Three members of the North West Provincial Legislature held a meeting with the Hawks to discuss progress on criminal cases opened against officials on Tuesday 28 March 2023.

This meeting comes after a decision was made during committee meetings with the Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts that criminal cases should be opened against officials who commit fraud and corruption that is detrimental to the delivery of services.

One of the offences recorded was the incorrect transfer of more than R134 million at the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality which was not recovered.

Unconventional business dealings at the Greater Taung Local Municipality, Department of Human Settlements, Dr Ruth Segomotsi District Municipality, Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, NTI Group, and many other establishments.

"We, as public representatives, have the responsibility to hold the government departments and municipalities accountable. We also have constitutional obligations to act against real or perceived acts of corruption and fraud fearlessly, with no regard to who commits such acts,” said North West Provincial Legislature member Mmoloki Cwaile.

“We are convinced that opening criminal cases is the only resort left to explore, given the arrogance and untruths of the government officials and employees.”

The North West Legislature's members were pleased with the progress made in the majority of the reported cases by the Hawks.

“A series of set meetings with the Hawks will be arranged to continue to administer processes of opening more criminal cases and sharing notes, to increase prospects of successful convictions at courts through availing additional critical information being acquired over the period,” said Cwaile.

In a report that the Hawks brought to the meeting, it was predicted that arrests will be made soon.
