The police sergeant (39) shot and killed his pregnant ex-wife this morning in a Brits hospital's parking lot. According to police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, the officer fired several shots at the deceased and instantly killed the victim on the spot.

He said at this stage the motive of the incident is unknown and investigations by the police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), are under way.

Mokgwabone said the suspect handed himself over to the police after the incident and is expected to make his first court appearance soon before the Brits Magistrate’s Court.

"It is alleged that the police officer who is stationed at Rapid Rail in Silverton, Pretoria, and resides at Ga-Rankuwa, went to the Brits hospital where his ex-wife was working. According to information, the wife who was working as a switchboard operator, was at the hospital entrance when the suspect fired several shots and instantly killed her," Mokgwabone added.

The provincial Police Commissioner,  Sello Kwena, has since condemned the incident and conveyed his deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends and colleagues.

Kwena has further urged police officials or employees to utilise the services of the Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) and other professionals, bearing in mind that this is the second incident involving police officers in less than a month.

Meanwhile, the MEC for Health in the province, Madoda Sambatha, is set to visit the Brits District Hospital this afternoon following the murder.

OFM News previously reported that another officer in the North West was arrested in March 2023 after the murder of his wife in Ikageleng near Zeerust, in the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.
