Heads are expected to roll at the Potchefstroom-based JB Marks Local Municipality over the abandoned Tlokwe Fire Station project. Millions remain unaccounted for.

This comes after a recent oversight visit which was conducted by the Portfolio Committee on the Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, chaired by Aaron Motswana, together with the Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts, chaired by Job Dliso.

Upon their arrival at the Tlokwe Fire Station, both committees discovered that the R19 million project was abandoned and there was no service provider on site, except a single security official guarding the incomplete project.

Dliso stated that this was their third visit to the project in the last three years and it seems like the municipality and the contractor are incapable of completing the project.

He further stated that the same contractor was terminated twice due to poor workmanship, conflict with the consultant, and slow progress. The project remains incomplete. Dliso said the committee will engage with law enforcement agencies to investigate the project.

“The initial R19 million project might escalate to triple the initial amount in order for the project to be completed through the appointment of another service provider. Yet, there is no accountability from the municipality. We are therefore left with no choice but to open cases so that heads can roll,” Dliso concluded.
