Film and Publications Board to address cyberbullying at UFS─── ZENANDE MPAME 14:32 Fri, 19 May 2023
A discussion on the detrimental effects of cyberbullying in South Africa will take place on the campus of the UFS in Bloemfontein on Monday 22 May 2023.
The Film and Publications Board (FPB), in a nationwide effort to combat online harm and cyberbullying, will be visiting the campus.
The visit is a component of a more extensive effort to interact with institutions of higher education and to encourage student conversations on online damage and cyberbullying in South Africa.
The Global Advisor Cyberbullying study notes that the frequency of cyberbullying in South Africa has considerably increased.
25% of parents said that their kids had experienced cyberbullying, and 54% said they knew of a child in their neighbourhood who had been bullied.
The alarming statistics highlight the urgent need to protect children and youth from the risks of online harassment.
The visit to the UFS will be an opportunity to engage with students in an open discussion about the impact of cyberbullying and the importance of responsible online behaviour.
“Insights from the youth will assist the FPB to develop regulatory and non-regulatory instruments for a safer online environment,” said Dr Mashilo Boloka, Chief Executive Officer of the Film and Publications Board.
Boloko said the dialogue session at the UFS will feature expert panellists and representatives from the FPB who will share insights, experiences, and strategies to tackle cyberbullying effectively.
This dialogue aims to provide students with the skills and information they need to prevent online damage, encourage empathy, and cultivate an environment of respect and compassion in their online interactions.
