Mokone said the matter is under consideration and that approval must be granted before the House can participate in the matter.

EFF Free State chairperson Mapheule Liphoko submitted the motion on Monday 3 July 2023, in response to the provincial government spending R3 million on the funeral of former Education MEC Tate Makgoe.

Dukwana is the first premier to face a motion of no confidence in the legislature since former premier Ace Magashule in 2018. Dukwana was elected as the new premier on Friday 24 February 2023, with 17 votes. He defeated opposition party leader Roy Jankielsohn, who received seven votes. A total of 27 of the 30 members of the Provincial Legislature voted, with three EFF members abstaining and two members absent.

Dukwana's election as the premier comes after premier Sisi Ntombela resigned on Tuesday 21 February 2023 after the ANC PEC, led by Dukwana, redeployed her.
