The DA speaker for the Mangaung Metro is set to face a motion of no confidence today. It was tabled by the African Transformation Movement (ATM) against Maryke Davies of the DA. 

In July, OFM News reported that the ATM, who is in alliance with the ANC in the council, brought the motion against Davies.  

It relates to a certain meeting of which details are reportedly sub judice. However, ATM said Davies has “grossly failed to chair meetings in council” and made irrational decisions without allowing councillors to debate the matters. 

DA Caucus Leader Johan Pretorius previously said they would reject this motion. It would be illegal to discuss it in the council. Meanwhile, Davies told OFM in council today, before the start of the meeting, that she is not phased by the motion. She said the motion was baseless.

“If it does succeed it means the council would have taken an illegal decision because it contradicts our local government legislation, so no am I not phased at all.”

Davies recused herself from the proceedings and said the Acting City Manager, Maurine Ntshidisane, would take the position to lead the proceedings, but this was interjected. 

Ntshidisane explained that she would only be overseeing the process of electing an acting speaker who would then preside over the motion against Davies. 

The councillors nominated councillors from the political parties, including the DA, EFF, and ANC, to preside over this.
