“Cllr. Maryke Davies, as the speaker of the Council, has demonstrated impartiality in defending the rights and privileges of all members. She upheld the principles of freedom of expression and based her rulings on relevant legislation."

The DA has threatened with court action following the removal of Maryke Davies as speaker of the Mangaung Metro on Wednesday (20/9).

DA Caucus Leader Johan Pretorius told OFM News the motion brought by ANC coalition partners in the council was erratic and unlawful, adding acting Speaker Pulane Mohibidu dismally failed to interpret the most basic legislation governing municipal councils.

Pretorius and other councillors from various political parties labelled yesterday's meeting as a circus. ANC Mangaung Regional Chairperson Lawrence Mathae was elected unopposed as the new speaker, but his election was marred by controversy, confusion and chaos.

Pretorius said during Davies’ tenure as speaker she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to ensuring the efficient operation of the council, guided by a set of core values including freedom, fairness, opportunity, and diversity.

‘Throughout her tenure, she remained neutral’

“Cllr. Maryke Davies, as the speaker of the council, has demonstrated impartiality in defending the rights and privileges of all members. She upheld the principles of freedom of expression and based her rulings on relevant legislation.

“Throughout her tenure, she remained neutral, ensuring that the Standing Rules and Orders were respected, fostering an environment for democratic debate. Her integrity has been commendable, marking a significant and rare occurrence in the 14 years of my career as a councillor in this Mangaung Metro Council.”

During her right of reply to the African Transformation Movement no-confidence motion against her Davies said the allegations contained in it were baseless.

‘They want to get rid of me because I’m a DA councillor’

She said the only purpose of the motion was “to get rid of me because I am a DA councillor and it does not fit into the political agendas of the ATM and ANC”.

ATM said Davies has “grossly failed to chair meetings in council” and made irrational decisions without allowing councillors to debate matters.

However, speaking to OFM News on Wednesday before the special council sitting, Davies said if it does succeed it meant the council would have taken an illegal decision because it contravenes local government legislation. “So no, I’m not phased at all.”
