The Welkom police have opened an investigation and are looking for an unknown motorist who sexually assaulted, kidnapped, and robbed a matric learner who was waiting for a taxi in October.

The learner was from a camp for matriculants and was accompanied by her mother’s cousin on Friday (13/10) to wait for a taxi next to Reitzpark Primary School, Welkom. A man driving a blue Renault Clio sedan stopped next to them and loaded the learner's luggage and books into the car.

The luggage included a blanket, toiletries, clothes, a pillow case, a school bag with books, a P40 Hisense cell phone, and cash.

‘The vehicle had no registration number at the back’

“The driver took her to a secluded area on the outskirts of Welkom towards Theunissen, he took out a knife and demanded cash and sexually assaulted, and robbed her. We are continuing with our investigation in searching for this suspect.”

“After the rape ordeal, he ordered her to exit the car before driving off. The vehicle had no registration number at the back,” said Free State police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng.

Thakeng said the girl was given a lift by another person who took her home and the incident was reported at the Welkom Police Station.
