The Free State welcomed 75 babies this Easter, according to provincial health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi. Thirty-six boys and 39 girls were born on Good Friday (29/3).

The first baby welcomed on Good Friday was a boy born at one minute past midnight at Parys district hospital, weighing a healthy 3.34kg. Nala municipality welcomed twin boys at 4:20, while another set of twins was born at Pelonomi private hospital at 21:30. Mvambi also shared that a baby boy was born on the way to Boitumelo regional hospital in Kroonstad.

Provincial health MEC Mathabo Leeto sent her well wishes to all the mothers and also took the opportunity to urge all pregnant women, or those who suspect they might be pregnant, to visit their nearest health care facility to receive the necessary check-ups. She also reminded people that family planning services are available at public health care facilities in the province.

Leeto also cautioned against unprotected sex and teenage pregnacy, saying: “Abstain from sex or practice safe sex if you are of the right consenting age. We further urge our communities to protect our children against teenage pregnancy.”
