The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has reaffirmed its dedication to peacekeeping missions across the continent.

This pledge was emphasised during the UN International Peacekeeping Day ceremony held at De Brug in the Free State on Thursday (29/5).

The event paid tribute to soldiers who lost their lives while serving in peacekeeping missions, with Defence Minister Angie Motshekga, SANDF Chief Gen. Rudzani Maphwanya, Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha Mathae, Mangaung Mayor Gregory Nthatisi, and families of the deceased in attendance.

In a solemn moment, Minister Motshekga led a wreath-laying ceremony to honour the sacrifices of soldiers who died protecting the vulnerable through UN peacekeeping missions. Speaking to those gathered, Maphwanya underscored the significance of South Africa’s role in maintaining peace on the continent.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to our members who continue to serve as credible peacekeepers in their various deployments. Your nation stands behind you. We will continue to cherish your efforts, striving every day to build a brighter future for the communities where you are deployed and for your own country.”

He reminded soldiers of their unique role and urged them to embrace discipline. “Remember everything that makes you different from others. You are destined for success after success because you subscribe to the most noble belief – that discipline is the mother of victory.”

Maphwanya also highlighted the need to modernise peacekeeping operations by leveraging advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, to address emerging challenges.

Motshekga paid a heartfelt tribute to the fallen soldiers, acknowledging the emotional toll on families and communities. “It’s an emotional day for me, especially seeing children and parents who lost their loved ones, so emotional,” she said.

The SANDF continues to provide comprehensive support to the families of fallen soldiers, including psychosocial and financial assistance. Educational trusts have been established for the children of deceased members, ensuring their futures are safeguarded.

Botshabelo resident Boniwe Mobe, the widow of a soldier who lost his life during a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a representative of the families, expressed gratitude for the SANDF’s support.

“I feel at home here, as this was my husband’s home. Losing my husband has been tough for me and our son, as he was the breadwinner, but the support from the SANDF has made things easier for us,” she said.
