Main suspect in Free State woman’s murder shot dead in Durban─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 12:11 Fri, 30 May 2025

One of the suspects linked to the murder of a Free State woman whose body was discovered in Gauteng, has been fatally shot during a police operation in Durban.
Olorato Mongale’s tragic death has sparked outrage and intensified efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
Mongale’s body was found on Monday (25/5) in Lombardy West, Randburg, days after she was last seen leaving her residential complex in a white VW Polo. Police investigations revealed that the vehicle had fake registration plates copied from a Toyota Hilux. Her personal belongings, including a cell phone, wallet, and handbag, were later found abandoned in Kew, Johannesburg.
National police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe confirmed the main suspect in the case was located at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti in the early hours of Friday (30/5). When police attempted to apprehend the suspect, he opened fire on them, leading officers to return fire.

The parents of the deceased suspect were taken into custody for questioning. The father allegedly owns the VW Polo used in the murder. The mother is accused of tipping off her son, enabling him to evade arrest earlier in the week when police arrived at their home in Inanda, Durban.
Further evidence was gathered when police discovered and seized the VW Polo at a panel beater workshop in Phoenix, Durban. Forensic experts identified traces of blood inside the vehicle, strengthening the case against the suspects.
KZN Police Commissioner Lt.Genl. Nhlanhla Mkhanazi said the suspect who was shot, confessed to the murder of Mongale and wanted to commit suicide. It’s understood that he also said the other suspect has fled beyond the border.
Mkhwanazi said the suspect has been involved in other kidnapping cases, and police have received over 80 calls from victims who came forward.

Authorities expanded the search to include a third suspect, Bongani Mthimkhulu, who is believed to be connected to the murder. Mthimkhulu is reportedly a friend of Philangenkosi Makhanya, another key suspect in the case.
Police have released an image of Mthimkhulu dressed in a white top as part of their appeal to the public for assistance in locating him.
Two other suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Philangenkosi Makhanya, remain at large, and the investigation is reaching what Mathe described as a “critical and sensitive stage”.

The anti-kidnapping task team continues to pursue leads, urging anyone with information about the suspects or the case to come forward. “This investigation remains a priority, and we are confident that the remaining suspects will be brought to justice.
“We thank the public for their support and ask for continued cooperation as we work to ensure justice for Olorato Mongale,” said Mathe.
As investigations continue, Mongale’s family and the broader community remain hopeful that all involved in the heinous crime will be held accountable.
