Police in the North West Province are investigating serious allegations against one of their own, following a video circulating on social media that appears to show a uniformed officer allegedly intoxicated while on duty.

The video, which has gained traction on TikTok, depicts a group of community members confronting a police officer and accusing him of being intoxicated. The officer, who is seen in full uniform and in the company of other police officials, is the focus of public outrage in the video.

Responding to the allegations, North West police spokesperson Col. Sabata Mokgwabone emphasised the gravity of the matter.

“These allegations cannot and should not be taken lightly, as they are damaging to the integrity and professional image of the SAPS, further contributing to the trust deficit between the police and the community,” he stated.

He added that a thorough and swift investigation is critical and will require cooperation from witnesses.

“It is important that such allegations be investigated expeditiously, and this will require the cooperation of all witnesses,” Mokgwabone said.

According to preliminary investigations, the SAPS has identified two key individuals who could assist in uncovering the truth. These individuals are affiliated with the Patriotic Alliance and Operation Dudula and had travelled from Gauteng to support a group in Bethanie.

“Efforts have been made by talking to locals to obtain evidence, and it has been indicated that the two are best placed to help unravel the allegations against the police officer.

“The SAPS is therefore calling upon them to urgently contact the District Commissioner or the Provincial Corporate Communication and Liaison Department to assist in this investigation,” Mokgwabone said.

He further assured the public that the investigation will be conducted with impartiality. “It is equally important to point out that the matter will be investigated without fear, favour, or prejudice.”

The Provincial Commissioner has also weighed in, expressing a firm stance against misconduct within the ranks.

“The Provincial Commissioner, who has made it clear that ill-discipline and intemperate behaviour by members will not be tolerated, views the video and the allegations in a very serious light. He has instructed the District Commissioner to immediately investigate the allegations, which, if confirmed, would amount not only to serious misconduct but also a criminal offence,” Mokgwabone said.

Mokgwabone also cautioned the public and potential witnesses about the legal implications of sharing unverified or unreported claims.

‘Obstructing police work is a criminal act’

“Two possible witnesses are further advised that making and publicising information of such a serious nature without reporting it to the relevant authorities may result in them being charged with defeating or obstructing the course of justice,” he warned.

He concluded by reiterating that obstructing police work or spreading malicious, defamatory content is a criminal act.

“It is a criminal offence to obstruct, interfere with, or hinder the police in the execution of their duties, including maliciously circulating false or defamatory statements,” he said.
