Bloemfontein’s Omolemo Taje gears up for Dubai rugby tour─── REFILWE BEKANE 08:30 Thu, 24 Jul 2025

A promising young rugby player from Bloemfontein is poised to represent South Africa on an international platform as he prepares to embark on a specialised sports tour to Dubai.
Omolemo Taje (16) was recently selected for a team of top U19 sevens rugby players from the VKB U19 Platteland Rugby Week. He will travel to Dubai from November (26/7) to December (3/12) to compete in a series of matches.
Omolemo’s journey in rugby began at the age of ten, initially as a second priority until his coaches recognised his immense potential.
“It was in Grade 6, when I played U13 rugby, that I started taking the sport more seriously,” said Omolemo. His dedication, discipline, and exceptional athletic ability have earned him significant recognition from coaches and selectors in local and regional competitions.
Omolemo views this as a significant privilege and a testament to his hard work. “On the field, I am trying to highlight my name and get more scholarships from outside South Africa, and not only in South Africa, I can go far, and I have the potential,” he said.
Reflecting on the impact of rugby on his life, Omolemo highlighted the discipline the sport has instilled in him. Quoting a well-known adage, he added “with great powers comes great responsibility”.
Realisation of dream hinges on financial support
He thrives under pressure, believing that the responsibility of representing South Africa internationally motivates him to perform at his best.
However, the realisation of this dream hinges on securing financial support. Omolemo is actively seeking sponsors to help cover the costs of the Dubai trip.
He remains optimistic, offering a message of encouragement to aspiring athletes: “You can do it no matter what people tell you. Remember that God is your strength,” he said.
Omolemo’s father, Thabo Jacob Taje, expressed immense pride in his son’s achievements. He became a strong pillar of support after witnessing Omolemo’s profound passion for the sport. The family has initiated a campaign to make the trip possible, hoping for community and corporate assistance.
