The Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (PACOFS) was a hub of knowledge and inspiration on Friday (5/9), as the Digital Content Creators Colloquium entered its third day.

Themed around the dynamic world of music and radio, the session aimed to equip emerging and prominent artists with the skills and strategic advice needed to thrive in the modern entertainment landscape. A panel of respected industry figures, including veteran musician Press Sihlangu, alongside Demetri Beja, a music compiler at OFM, and Thabo Molefe, better known as Tbo, provided invaluable guidance to the captivated audience.

The discussion was centered on navigating the digital realm and leveraging traditional platforms to build a sustainable career. Sihlangu, a prominent voice in the music industry, emphasised the enduring power of traditional media. “Radio is still the biggest thing in the world,” he stated, a sentiment that resonated with the audience.

He urged upcoming artists to prioritise self-knowledge and hone their unique skills as a cornerstone for success, a point that sparked a lively panel discussion and a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Echoing this focus on strategic development, Beja advised artists to be meticulous in their approach to music promotion.

He stressed the importance of identifying and utilising the correct channels for song submission, ensuring that their work reaches the right gatekeepers and maximises its potential for airplay and exposure.

Empowering creative community

The colloquium, which is set to continue, has been a beacon of empowerment for the creative community.

By bringing together established professionals and those at the beginning of their journey, the event is fulfilling its mission to impart practical knowledge and foster a supportive network.

The day’s sessions underscored a critical message: while digital platforms offer unprecedented opportunities, a deep understanding of one's craft and the industry's foundational structures remains paramount for lasting success.
