Tourism Month is celebrated annually in September, and provides a heightened month-long focus on the importance of the sector to the South African economy.

Parys is a town situated on the southern bank of the Vaal River. It was established in 1876 on the farm Klipspruit, proclaimed in 1882, and attained municipal status in 1887.

The town is believed to have been named after Paris, France, at the suggestion of a German surveyor named Schilbach, who had participated in the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War.

Today, Parys is a popular destination for both local and international visitors, offering a variety of accommodation options including guesthouses, lodges, and Airbnbs.

“We offer everything from gentle spa days followed by a meander through the picturesque town, where you can enjoy shopping or a leisurely meal at one of our many coffee shops and restaurants,” said Parys Info & Tourism chairperson Werda Visser.

“For the more adventurous souls, Parys offers zip-lining, canoeing, horse riding, fishing, mountain biking, and running trails – just to name a few. We're proud to say that safaris are also available in the surrounding areas, where visitors can spot four of the Big Five.

“Planning a wedding? Parys is the perfect choice. Bridal couples are truly spoiled for choice, with a wide range of wedding venues and accommodation options to suit every style and budget.”

The town also has a museum in the heart of the tourist district, as well as tour guides who will tell you more about the world’s largest meteor impact site. This site is more than 2 billion years old and is recognised as one of the few World Heritage sites in South Africa, she said.
