Explore CSAs gems this Tourism Month with OFM: Senekal─── ZENANDE MPAME 13:00 Thu, 11 Sep 2025

Senekal is a town situated on the Klipspruit, approximately 184 km northeast of Bloemfontein, 67 km west of Bethlehem, and 66 km east-northeast of Winburg.
Tourism Month, celebrated annually in September, offers a focused opportunity to highlight the vital role of the tourism sector in the South African economy. Senekal was founded in 1875 on the farm De Put.
It was named after Frederik Petrus Senekal (1815–1866), who led the commando against Witsie (Chief Oetsi of the Makholokoe clan) and participated in the First and Second Basotho Wars of 1865–1866. Today, Senekal is a key agricultural hub, producing maize, sunflower, wheat, milk, and livestock.
“When I think about Senekal, there are a few special places that always stand out for me,” said Setsoto Municipality councillor Riëtte Dell. “I love visiting the beautiful NG Kerk, surrounded by a wall of petrified tree trunks – something truly unique.
“I also enjoy stopping at Waterval Padstal, with its charming shop and local flavour. Visitors can also explore the Biddulphsberg Battle Site, where a significant Anglo-Boer War battle took place.”
Senekal offers a wide range of tourist accommodation, including bed and breakfasts, guest houses, guest farms, hotels, self-catering units, and camping sites.
