A sense of unease hangs over the Galeshewe community in the Northern Cape as police intensify their search for the driver behind a fatal hit-and-run.

According to police spokesperson Serg Molefi Shemane, the victim, a 36-year-old woman, was reportedly struck by a speeding white Volkswagen vehicle on Hulana Street in the early hours of Sunday morning. “The vehicle was allegedly traveling at a high speed when the victim was knocked down, and subsequently drove from the scene,” said Shimane.

The victim was reportedly rushed to a local hospital and declared dead on arrival. The Galeshewe serious and violent crimes unit has taken over the investigation, but with the vehicle’s registration number unknown, the public’s assistance is considered crucial.

Detective Sergeant Garcia Bitterbos has urged anyone with information to come forward and contact his unit directly at 082 469 1744, or to use the national Crime Stop number or the MySAPS App.

All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.

Meanwhile, justice has prevailed for another family torn apart by violence, as a man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his partner. Butiki Maboitshega, 40, received the sentence in the Kimberley High Court on Monday (8/8), seen as a victory in the fight against gender-based violence.

The conviction stems from a February 2024 incident where the 35-year-old victim was murdered on her way home with Maboitshega. Following a swift police response prompted by concerned neighbours, Maboitshega was arrested after initially claiming to have found the victim already dead.

The case was brought to a successful close through the diligent work of Detective Warrant Officer Thekiso Mokoroane of the Warrenton detective unit.

Frances Baard district commissioner Major General Charlotte Makgari commended the detective and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting the vulnerable.
