Community’s help asked after discovery of newborn near Mmabatho cemetery─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:57 Tue, 23 Sep 2025

Residents have been left reeling after the discovery of a newborn baby’s body near the Mmabatho cemetery in North West.
Authorities have called on residents to assist with information that may aid the ongoing police investigation. The discovery was made on Monday (22/9) morning by community members using a footpath between Ramosadi Village and the Megacity shopping complex.
The path runs past the Arts Council building, and near its perimeter wall lies an informal dumping site where the baby’s remains were discovered. Apparently, the dumping site was smouldering. The newborn’s body was found covered in what appeared to be a partly burned plastic bag.
The office of the community safety and transport management MEC was alerted by concerned residents who had begun gathering at the scene, said spokesperson Oshebeng Koonyaditse.
“MEC (Wessels) Morweng is grateful for the swift response of the Mmabatho police who instantly secured the crime scene, which had already been trampled by passers-by unaware of the misdeed.”
Morweng expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the incident. “He has urged all community members who might have any information to cooperate with the police in the ongoing investigation.”
The MEC conducted an oversight visit to the newly-built Kanana police station in Klerksdorp on Friday (19/9) as part of the Thuntsha Lerole accelerated service delivery programme. He pledged to work with provincial police management and the minister of police to ensure critical resources are mobilised for stations across the province.
He also voiced concern over the rising number of rape and abuse cases reported in the province, noting similar challenges were being raised during oversight visits across various districts.
