With Tourism Month nearing its end, it is time to shed some light on the “town of light”. With more than 30,000 residents, Lichtenburg ranks among the ten largest towns in North West.

Founded in 1873 by Transvaal President Thomas François Burgers, its name referred to a remark by the president that it would be a bright beacon in the western Transvaal.

Lichtenburg shines with a rich heritage, from the 1926 diamond rush that drew over 100,000 seekers, to its role as the administrative centre of Ditsobotla Municipality.

It houses the headquarters of NWK and is the centre of a fertile region for growing maize, groundnuts, and sunflowers.

Set in the maize triangle, Lichtenburg thrives on agriculture and cement production, making it a cornerstone of the region’s economy.

Adventurers can explore the Burning Vlei or Lichtenburg game breeding farm.

With attractions such as the Afrikaans Language Monument, De la Rey Memorial, Old Plantation House (home of Col. H. du Toit), and more, Lichtenburg offers something for everyone.
