The police service in the Free State province will host its annual charity golf day on Thursday, 13 November, in Bloemfontein.

The primary goal of the day is to collect money for the children of police employees who have died on duty, said Const. Serobia Sima. Funds raised will go towards financing the educational needs of these children, supporting them from basic schooling to tertiary studies.

The golf day format was chosen to encourage broad participation from various sectors.

The public, businesses, and other stakeholders are invited to contribute. The provincial office is expecting around 120 to 150 participants.

“I would appeal and like the community to help us make this event a success, raise funds for those children or those individuals that benefit from this, so that we can keep on supporting them throughout their careers, be it school careers or tertiary careers,” said Sima.

The funds collected during the golf day are directed to the Sapset trust fund. It allocates payments directly to recognised and accredited educational institutions, covering costs for the eligible children.

Hosting this event is seen by the police as a crucial way to honour the memory and service of their deceased colleagues. The event will feature some of the children who have benefited from the fund, who will share their stories of how the fund helped them pursue their education after losing a parent in the line of duty.

“We just like them to participate in the event or pledge in the form of sponsorship for them so that the movement can continue,” said Sima.

Information on how to donate or sponsor is available via a QR code displayed on the event’s social media posters. The Free State police are encouraging all community members to participate or contribute to this effort.
