An independent investigation report into the Jagersfontein mine dam wall collapse is expected to be officially released to the public and key stakeholders on Friday (28/11).

The long-awaited report will be presented during a briefing led by water and sanitation deputy ministers David Mahlobo and Sello Seitlholo at Diamante Hospital in Jagersfontein at 10:00. Municipality spokesperson Solomzi Phama told OFM News they confirm, “without fear of favour”, there was negligence which led to the flood disaster, which claimed lives and left over 100 people homeless or destitute.

Some municipal infrastructure was destroyed. She had said mayor Xolani Tseletsele mentioned the role of negligence even before he ascended to the position of mayor.

The release of the report represents an important milestone in reinforcing government’s commitment to accountability and transparency, said department of water and sanitation (DWS) head of communications Dr Mandla Mathebula.

Both deputy ministers will brief the community and the media on the investigation’s findings, actions taken since the disaster, and ongoing measures aimed at preventing similar incidents to safeguard communities nationwide.

Community leader Lefa Shale previously told OFM News the Jagersfontein Mine had neglected its mandatory community development responsibilities for years, leaving residents to struggle while the mine continued to operate profitably. Shale alleged tcertain politicians with vested interests enabled the mine’s operations at the expense of local living conditions, which he described as “squalor”.

Meanwhile, the Jagersfontein Magistrate’s Court has postponed further proceedings related to the civil lawsuit filed in connection with the 2022 dam collapse. The court has set 14 January 2026 as the date to determine when the high court hearing will commence.

The lawsuit, brought by 26 victims and the Kopanong Local Municipality, involves five accused who face charges including murder, property damage, and health and safety violations. Some victims who did not pursue legal action have since received houses and compensation for lost belongings such as furniture, said Tseletsele.

“As things are, life is back to normal with challenges,” he said, adding that the municipality continues to address outstanding issues directly with residents and through their legal representatives.
