Illegal mining suspects evaded arrest after fleeing into nearby bushes during a high-impact police operation on a farm in Kroondal, outside Rustenburg, on Thursday (24/12).

The operation was led by North West acting provincial commissioner Maj. Gen. Ryno Naidoo, and formed part of an intensified provincial crackdown on illicit mining activities that have plagued several communities in the province.

A multidisciplinary team comprising the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), district and Rustenburg visible policing, crime intelligence, public order police, provincial detectives, the department of mineral and petroleum resources as well as Glencore mine officials, executed the operation.

North West police spokesperson Brig. Sabata Mokgwabone said the team successfully confiscated a significant amount of equipment believed to have been used in illegal mining. The seized items included 20 excavators, two light delivery vehicles, and two trucks.

“Unfortunately, the suspects fled into the bushes upon noticing the police presence and managed to evade arrest,” said Mokgwabone.

Despite the escape of the suspects, police have reiterated their commitment to tackling illegal mining head-on. Mokgwabone warned law enforcement agencies, working alongside other stakeholders, will continue to act decisively to dismantle illegal mining operations.

“Illegal mining undermines the legitimate economy and poses serious risks to the safety and livelihoods of residents. Police will not relent in their efforts to bring those involved to justice,” he said.

The North West province is among several regions in South Africa that have recently experienced a surge in illegal mining activities. These challenges have prompted visits by senior government and police officials, who have since deployed additional resources to affected areas.

In Bapong village near Brits, a dedicated task team was established following concerns raised by residents about their safety. Community members cited open mining holes and criminal activities associated with illegal mining as major threats.

Since the issue was brought into the spotlight, police have made notable progress, with more than 20 illegal miners arrested in the area.

Authorities say operations across the province will continue as part of a sustained effort to curb illicit mining and restore safety and stability to affected communities.
