The South African police service (Saps) observed National Police Day on Tuesday (27/1), marking the second phase of a national programme with a public display at the Dr Petrus Rantlai Molemela Stadium.
Established by the cabinet in 2005, National Police Day is an annual event designated to commemorate the sacrifices of officers and honour those who have fallen in the line of duty. This year’s proceedings integrate a career expo specifically targeting 1,000 invited learners from various districts across the Free State province.
The event featured operational demonstrations of machinery and tactical skills by specialised units. Participating divisions include:
- The special task force;
- The national intervention unit; and
- The canine (K9) unit.

The assembly included officials who graduated, appearing in their graduation attire. Beyond tactical demonstrations, it included choreographed dancing and singing performed by participants.
Additionally, participating school learners were given presents as part of the day’s activities. These displays aim to showcase the diverse disciplines and personnel within the service.
The expo features technical experts, including DNA analysts from the forensic science laboratory, legal advocates, accountants, and pilots, to illustrate policing roles beyond traditional station work.
During the event, Casssel Mathale addressed the assembly regarding the significance of the date.
“This day reminds us of the sacrifice that the women and men in blue have made and continue to make," said Mathale. The address gave honour to individuals who lost their lives during duty, those currently serving, and those who served in the past.
“Police service is more than a job, it is a deep and personal calling, a deep commitment to protect lives,” said Mathale.
