Central South Africa has taken a major leap in vascular healthcare.

Life Rosepark hospital has set a new benchmark for healthcare in central South Africa with the launch of its Vascular Hybrid Theatre in Bloemfontein. It’s the region’s first theatre of its kind.

It combines advanced imaging technology with the flexibility to perform both open and minimally invasive vascular procedures in a single, state-of-the-art environment. The theatre was opened on Friday (23/1) at the hospital.

The facility positions Bloemfontein as a regional hub for vascular excellence, supporting the Free State Advanced Aortic Centre in delivering complex aortic and vascular interventions. The event was attended by hospital management, doctors, clinicians, and distinguished guests, including Universitas academic hospital CEO Dr Balekile Mzangwa.

“This is far more than a new operating theatre; it is a step forward for healthcare in central South Africa,” said Life Rosepark hospital vascular surgeon and Vascular Society of Southern Africa president Prof. Asha Malan.

“For too long, geography has dictated our patients’ medical outcomes. Today, we say clearly and confidently that world-class vascular care belongs right here, close to home in our community.”

This marks the start of a new chapter in how we deliver vascular care in this region – one defined by precision, collaboration, and a relentless focus on what is best for the patient, she said.

The Philips Azerion FlexArm system, an imaging platform that provides real-time visualisation, improved procedure precision, and decreased radiation exposure for both patients and physicians, is at the centre of the new theatre. This technology enables clinicians to tailor treatment with millimetre accuracy, particularly in complex cases involving the aorta, carotid arteries, and visceral vessels.

Procedures that once required ten to twelve hours of surgery can now be performed through small incisions, reducing risk and recovery time while aligning with international best practice.

“This theatre is not simply an upgrade to our facilities, it is an investment in the future of healthcare for the Free State,” said Life Rosepark hospital manager Hein Rossouw. “From the outset, our vision was to create a space where innovation, patient-centred care, and clinical excellence could come together.

“I am deeply proud of the team that made this possible and grateful to Life Healthcare for supporting a project that will change how vascular disease is treated in our region.”
