Police at the Tierpoort station in the Mangaung metro have launched an investigation into a hit-and-run incident that resulted in a fatality on the N1.

The incident occurred on Friday night (6/2), about 35km south of Bloemfontein near the Riversford/Koppieskraal offramp. The Tierpoort frontline service received a report from the 10111 centre at around 22:00.

A patrol vehicle was sent to the location to secure the area.

Upon arrival, police officers found human remains, including flesh, tissue, and bone fragments, spread across the roadway. No motor vehicle involved in the collision remained at the scene.

“Local criminal record centre experts were summoned to process the scene, and pathology service personnel gathered the remains,” said Free State police spokesperson Lt. Col. Thabo Covane. Investigators also recovered an orange shirt from the site.

A case of culpable homicide has been officially opened at the Tierpoort police station to determine the circumstances of the death and identify the vehicle involved. “Police seek information that can help with hit-and-run investigation on N1 national road,” said Covane.
