Tensions are running high at the headquarters of the Mangaung metro on Wednesday morning (25/2), where workers have gathered in protest over unpaid overtime.

Waste department workers of the ailing metro are up in arms after allegedly not receiving their overtime pay. Scores of workers have assembled at the municipal headquarters, voicing their frustration, picketing, and demanding immediate intervention from management.

A media briefing scheduled for 10:00 was abruptly halted amid the unrest. Mangaung mayor Gregory Nthatisi was forced to halt proceedings. He was escorted back to his office by security personnel as tensions escalated. Shortly thereafter, he reemerged to address the workers.

The situation remains volatile, with workers continuing to demand answers regarding their outstanding payments. Authorities are monitoring the developments closely.

A letter from municipal manager Sello More was sent on Tuesday to inform employees overtime will only be processed and issued next Wednesday (4/3).
