Explore nature for free this National Gardens Week─── ZENANDE MPAME 14:29 Mon, 09 Mar 2026
South Africans will have the opportunity to explore some of the country’s most celebrated botanical and zoological gardens for free during National Gardens Week.
The initiative, hosted by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi), runs from Monday (9/3) till Sunday. The free week is designed to encourage people to connect with nature, learn about biodiversity, and enjoy outdoor activities.
The campaign returns following the success of its inaugural edition in 2025, which attracted more than 126,000 visitors to Sanbi’s eleven national botanical gardens and two zoological gardens.
This year’s theme, Your Free Passport to Nature: Celebrate, Restore and Protect All Life, highlights South Africa’s extraordinary biodiversity and encourages visitors to take an active role in protecting it.
“We ordinarily opened for seniors on Tuesday, but now we are seeing that a new generation of people needs to reconnect with nature,” said Sanbi marketing and communications director Nontsikelelo Mpulo.
“Many people have moved to urban spaces, and our gardens are located in those spaces, so what a useful opportunity for people to then reconnect with what is essentially our natural heritage.”
Walking tours
Numerous gardens offer guided walking tours where guests can learn about indigenous plants, medicinal species, and the importance of protecting local ecosystems.
Visitors can also take part in bird and insect observation, plant exhibitions, and demonstrations on water-wise gardening, providing practical tips for creating environmentally friendly gardens at home.
Visitors can also explore scenic walking paths, enjoy picnic spots, or take in unique features such as treetop walkways and flowering displays. At zoological gardens, guests can also observe a variety of animals and learn about conservation efforts aimed at protecting endangered species, making the visit both enjoyable and meaningful.
The gardens participating in the free week are: Kirstenbosch, Walter Sisulu, Pretoria, Harold Porter National Botanicals, and the National Zoological Garden.
Residents who want to take advantage of the free or discounted entry must present proof of SA residency. This includes a South African ID document, a certified paper copy of the ID, an electronic copy of the ID, or a valid driver’s licence.
