Bram Fischer airport recognised among Africa’s best for departures─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:25 Thu, 12 Mar 2026
As air travel continues to grow across South Africa, Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein is positioning itself to meet rising passenger expectations while maintaining high service standards.
The airport has been recognised as one of Africa’s best airports for departures among those serving fewer than two million passengers in the 2025 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) customer experience awards. The recognition is a global benchmarking programme that measures passenger satisfaction across more than 400 airports in some 110 countries.
The awards, presented annually by Airport Council International, are based on real-time passenger feedback gathered through standardised arrival and departure surveys conducted at airports around the world.
The programme is widely regarded as a reliable indicator of service quality because it captures the experiences of travellers during their journey.
“The key to the airport’s success lies in ensuring that every traveller experiences a smooth, efficient, and welcoming journey,” said Bram Fischer International Airport manager Moses Seroto. “If you come to our airport, the way you are treated by everyone within the airport community contributes to that smooth journey.
“The recognition places both the airport and the region on the map. It is an achievement that local communities, businesses, and residents can take pride in as it showcases the Free State’s ability to deliver world-class service at a regional airport.”
Bram Fischer works hard to maintain the same service standards found at larger airports within the Airports Company South Africa network, he said.
Beyond providing travel services, the airport also contributes to economic development in Bloemfontein and surrounding communities, said Seroto. The airport regularly engages with small businesses and entrepreneurs, including hosting workshops for SMMEs in Mangaung and across the province.
The airport is planning improvements to its runways, taxiways, and apron areas, projects that will require contractors and service providers and contribute to job creation in the region.
Passenger comfort has also been prioritised through several improvements to the departure areas. Seating facilities have been upgraded, and additional electrical charging points have been installed to allow travellers to work or charge their devices while waiting for flights.
Managing peak travel periods is another important focus, Seroto added. The airport works closely with airlines to inform passengers when to proceed through security screening, helping to reduce congestion and maintain a smooth flow through the terminal.
