The funeral of the late former Free State premier and co-founder of Cope, Mosiua ‘Terror’ Lekota, is taking place at the Old Grey Sports Centre in Bloemfontein.

The Kroonstad-born Lekota died in the early hours of Wednesday (4/3) after a period of illness. He served as the first premier of the Free State from 1994 to 1996.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile will deliver the eulogy at the special official funeral category 2 on behalf of president Cyril Ramaphosa and the Republic of South Africa. Lekota also served as minister of defence.

As a member of the South African Students’ Organisation and a leading figure in the United Democratic Front (UDF), he played a significant role in mobilising communities against apartheid, said acting spokesperson to the deputy president, Keith Khoza. He was imprisoned on Robben Island for eight years alongside struggle leaders, including Nelson Mandela.

In the democratic era, Lekota served as the first premier of the Free State (1994–1996), the inaugural chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (1997–1999), and minister of defence from 1999 to 2008.

Free State premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae said the people of the province were close to Lekota’s heart and he always wanted the best for the country.

“It is very very rare that you will find a premier who relates so well with traditional leaders, with farmers in the agricultural sector, and different political parties. It’s exactly what is happening today, you saw the leadership of the DA here, you saw the leadership of Cope, you saw the leadership of the EFF, the ANC.

“All of them because they know the time ntate (mr) Terror was premier here, he related so well with everyone. He was not wearing a party cap; he was (a) man of integrity, who united this province.”

Meanwhile, the Mangaung Metro announced several road closures in Bloemfontein for the funeral proceedings.

Parking will be reserved from 06:00 in De Villiers and Charles Streets and on Nelson Mandela Drive. On Friday, Britz Road, next to the St Rose Roman Catholic Church in Bochabela, will be closed from 15:00 until the church service concludes.

The metro also warned that Park Road, from Parfitt Road to Ella Street, will be completely closed from 06:00 until the funeral service concludes. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.
