President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Human Rights Day event in Kimberley in the AR Abass stadium.

This year’s Human Rights Month is observed under the theme A Legacy of Courage: Protecting Rights, Preserving Humanity. This year’s event carries added significance as the country marks 30 years since the adoption of the Constitution of South Africa and its Bill of Rights.

South Africa has designated 21 March to commemorate as National Human Rights Day, in remembrance of the Sharpeville Massacre on 21 March 1960, where apartheid police killed 69 peaceful anti-apartheid protesters.

This day also honours 35 people who were killed on 21 March 1985 when apartheid police targeted community members after a funeral in KwaLanga, Uitenhage (now known as Kariega).

On Saturday (21/3), the government will provide services on wheels at the stadium, with multiple departments offering services directly to the public. This will be an opportunity for community members, especially those from remote areas, to access services they would not ordinarily reach due to transport costs and distance.

GCIS spokesperson William Baloyi said all preparations for the national event have been finalised. “It’s all systems go, the venue will officially be handed over to the government on Friday to do the final preparations, and we’re expecting to have a dry run with all stakeholders.

“All logistical arrangements have been addressed. Security will be managed by the police, supported by marshals to assist attendees.”

While acknowledging progress made since the advent of democracy, Baloyi noted challenges remain. “We have done a lot to meet the provisions of the Constitution, but increasing population demands and global challenges continue to impact service delivery. However, we have contingency plans in place to mitigate these challenges.”

Ahead of the main event, Ramaphosa is expected to visit the Re Tlameleng Special Needs School, where he will unveil the 2026 Human Rights Day legacy project. The initiative is aimed at promoting inclusive development and advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.

Last year, the day was celebrated at the Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Kariega, under the theme Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights.
