A Free State wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre is facing pressure to secure enough food for the animals in its care, with meat supplies for its lions emerging as a critical concern.

Zanchieta Wildlife Rescue & Lodge, situated 18km outside Bloemfontein on the road to Dealesville, is making an urgent appeal for support as it continues to care for more than a hundred rescued wild animals.

The centre says their focus is on building sustainable partnerships and securing consistent resources to ensure long-term survival and rehabilitation efforts.

Sanctuary for injured and abandoned wildlife

Operating as a non-profit organisation, the centre serves as a sanctuary for injured, abandoned, and displaced wildlife, working closely with nature conservation authorities to rehabilitate and protect animals in need.

Despite its important role, the centre faces ongoing challenges, with food supply remaining the most pressing concern. “Food is definitely the main thing,” said Zanchieta founder and owner Lizette van Schalkwyk.

“We rely heavily on donations, especially meat for the carnivores and fruit and vegetables for other animals. We have a little bit more than 110 animals, from lions, caracals, and servals to monkeys, genets, and meerkats. You name it, we’re looking after them.

“Local farmers, retailers and businesses can play a crucial role in addressing this need. Surplus or expired food items that are no longer suitable for human consumption can still be safely used to feed the animals.

“If it’s close enough, we can collect it ourselves. We also have the necessary documentation to ensure everything is handled responsibly,” she added.

Apart from feed, the centre requires a wide range of resources to maintain daily operations. From basic cleaning equipment such as brooms, rakes, and buckets, to building materials like cement, wood, fencing, and steel poles, the list of needs is extensive.

Items such as animal feed, medical supplies, safety gear, and even second-hand equipment can make a difference.

'Anybody can help us with anything'

Community members and volunteers are encouraged to assist with daily tasks, including cleaning enclosures, maintaining facilities, and helping with general upkeep. Skilled individuals, such as welders, electricians, and carpenters, can also contribute to improving infrastructure and animal habitats.

“Anybody can help us with anything,” said van Schalkwyk. “It doesn’t always have to be new items; even second-hand donations can go a long way.

“There are always vet bills, and transport is needed to collect food and supplies. Any kind of help makes a difference.”

Zanchieta is open to visitors daily from 10:00 to 17:00, offering an opportunity for the public to experience wildlife up close while enjoying the natural surroundings.

The facility includes picnic and braai areas, as well as an eatery, creating a family-friendly environment.
