Free State police divers have been commended for their efforts after successfully locating a submerged vehicle at the Vaal Dam, believed to be linked to a missing person case.

The body of Mohole Stephen Khanye, 70, was discovered after he was reported missing on 15 April. According to police, a vehicle found near Oranjeville is believed to be connected to the ongoing investigation. A search operation conducted on Tuesday (5/5) at the Vaal Dam led to the discovery.

“The operation was initiated following intelligence linking a submerged vehicle to a missing person investigation,” said Free State police spokesperson Sgt Josephine Rani.

“It has been marked by extreme challenges, including adverse weather conditions, strong water currents, and near-zero underwater visibility.” Despite the hazardous circumstances, diving unit members demonstrated “unwavering commitment to their duty”, she added.

Sgt Zwielie Simamane, along with fellow divers from the Bloemfontein-based unit, carried out multiple deep-water dives under dangerous conditions. Through persistence and adherence to search protocols, the team managed to locate the vehicle beneath a bridge near Oranjeville after six intensive dives.

However, recovery operations have been temporarily halted due to worsening weather conditions and safety concerns. Authorities indicated that the operation will resume once conditions improve.

Meanwhile, residents across Central South Africa have been warned to prepare for cold weather and thundershowers. The weather service cautioned that scattered thundershowers are expected over the Free State, Northern Cape, and western parts of North West until Thursday (7/5). Wet and windy conditions are also forecast across large parts of the country.

Widespread rainfall had been experienced over the Free State, extending into the Western and Eastern Cape, with some areas likely to receive between 100mm and 200mm of rain within 24 hours.

“There is a possibility of severe thunderstorms, which may lead to localised flooding, large amounts of small hail, and localised damage to settlements in the Free State and North West,” said forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela.
