Calls made for urgent support for Free State police officers after Hennenman tragedy─── ZENANDE MPAME 13:07 Tue, 09 Jun 2026
The DA has called for urgent intervention to strengthen mental health support and improve working conditions for police officers in the Free State.
The appeal follows a tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday (7/6) in Hennenman. A police officer allegedly shot and killed three of his girlfriend’s family members before taking his own life.
The party remains concerned by statistics that 29 police officers in the Free State took their own lives between 2021 and 2025, mostly with service pistols.
Hennenman has featured in many instances over three years, with at least one suicide taking place at a Hennenman police station every year between 2021 and 2024.
“Oversight visits to SAPS stations and interactions with individual members of the SAPS indicate that they are working under very stressful conditions,” said Free State DA community safety spokesperson Roy Jankielsohn.
“Officers are expected to deliver results despite severely inadequate resources, such as vehicles, computers, printers, and basic equipment. They operate in dilapidated buildings that undermine professionalism and are often subjected to bullying and victimisation.
“The DA remains concerned about the lack of emotional support for police officers, while 3,424 members do not meet the requirements to maintain firearm competency.”
Free State community safety, roads and transport MEC Jabu Mbalula appealed to police officers to lead by example and refrain from taking matters into their own hands. He urged police officers to seek assistance when facing personal challenges rather than resorting to violence and extended his condolences to the affected families.
According to police reports, the officer went to a plot where a family gathering was taking place in search of his girlfriend. It is alleged that he became angry when he could not find her and subsequently drew his firearm, opening fire on five people.
Three people were killed instantly. The deceased include the officer’s girlfriend’s mother, uncle, and another woman. Two other people sustained injuries during the shooting. One of the victims was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while the other, whose injuries were not considered life-threatening, was treated at the scene.
“We have wellness programs which are intended to help members struggling with different challenges,” said Mbalula. “It is unfortunate that four lives were lost unnecessarily.
“The police are working hard to determine what could have led to this tragedy.”
Free State police spokesperson Brig. Thandi Mbambo confirmed the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.
