Northern Cape police are investigating allegations a patient was raped while admitted to a private hospital in Kimberley.

The alleged incident reportedly occurred on Thursday (4/6), while the woman, 40, was asleep in a hospital ward. The complainant said prescription medication had left her drowsy and unable to wake up during the alleged assault.

She reportedly experienced abnormal pain at around 03:00 and rang a bell for assistance. A male nurse on duty allegedly responded and indicated he would call a sister, who subsequently provided her with medication.

The complainant further alleged she woke up again at around 03:30 and went to the bathroom, where she discovered a condom in the toilet. “I placed the condom in a plastic bag and handed it over to the police,” she said.

The woman claimed her pyjama pants had an unusual odour. She reportedly indicated she was unable to obtain a morning-after pill to prevent pregnancy.

“I tested HIV negative and was given prophylaxis and administered a hepatitis vaccine. DNA samples were taken and handed to the investigating officer.”

Northern Cape police spokesperson WO Molefi Shemane confirmed the Kimberley family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit is investigating the matter.

No arrests have been reported, and police have not disclosed further details.
