The body of Ernst Steynberg, 74, who had been missing since Sunday afternoon (26/7), has been found following an extensive search operation involving police, emergency services and members of the farming community.

Rev. Tinus Roux, the family’s pastor, confirmed Steynberg’s body was discovered on Tuesday morning on a hill behind the family’s home at Rietvallei farm near Rysmierbult.

At this stage, the cause of his death has not been determined, and no further details surrounding the circumstances of the incident have been released.

“It is with great sadness that I have to announce that our friend, Ernst Steynberg, has been found,” said Roux. 

“He was due to collect people from the airport on Sunday and had left all his personal belongings on the kitchen table. About 15 minutes after his wife last saw him, she went looking for him and realised he had disappeared.

“He was more than a friend to many of us; he was like family, and we extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Alise, their children and grandchildren during this incredibly difficult time.”“My last memory of you will be the wonderful time we spent together earlier this month and the laughter around the dining room table. Rest in peace, my friend,” said Roux.

Advice from The Pink Ladies is that when someone is missing:

• Get in touch with their friends and immediately report to SAPS, particularly if you feel that something has happened to them or they have come into some sort of harm.
• It is very important to let the organisation know whether the child or adult has some sort of dependency on alcohol and drugs, whether they suffer from dementia or have a medical condition that can affect their well-being and their state of mind.
• Even though the information won’t be published, it will be noted that they are vulnerable and people should treat them with care if they happen to come across them.
