One alleged business robbery suspect was fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire on Monday (3/8) evening, while the outstanding suspects remain at large. Police in Ficksburg are investigating a business robbery and three counts of attempted murder.

Police responded to an emergency call about a business robbery allegedly underway at a supermarket in the town. When officers arrived at the scene, members of the public were reportedly fleeing the store in panic. As police approached the shop, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the officers, prompting them to return fire.

After the shoot-off, police found an unidentified male lying on the pavement with a fatal gunshot wound. A 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off, together with ammunition, was recovered next to the deceased.

“The remaining suspects fled the scene on foot under the cover of darkness,” said Free State police spokesperson WO Mmako Mophiring. “During the incident, two police officers sustained gunshot wounds, one to the upper body and another to the right leg.

“A supermarket employee was also struck by a bullet in the arm. All three injured persons were transported to different hospitals, where they are receiving medical treatment.

“The exact number of suspects involved and whether any cash was stolen are still being investigated. No arrests have been made, and the identity of the deceased has not yet been established.”

Free State provincial commissioner Lt. Gen. Thabang Lesia commended the members of the police for their swift response and courage in confronting the armed suspects to protect the community while also defending themselves under dangerous circumstances.

Lesia wished the injured officers and the supermarket employee a speedy recovery and confirmed that the affected police members will receive professional support through the employee health and wellness programme.
