The Eastern Cape recorded the highest number of inspections with 14,948 shops, followed by the Free State with 10,406. Gauteng is third with 2,631 inspections, while KwaZulu-Natal recorded 2,617, Limpopo 1,315, North West 1,101, Northern Cape 915 and Mpumalanga 229.

The figures were released during a media briefing on immigration enforcement operations held on Friday (7/8). National joint operational and intelligence structure (Natjoints) chairperson Lt. Gen. Tebello Mosikili said compliance inspections of spaza shops would continue across all provinces.

“The inspections seek to ensure compliance with municipal by-laws, food safety regulations, business licensing requirements and immigration legislation where applicable.”Mosikili said the Border Management Authority was continuing to strengthen border operations through technology and intelligence-led interventions. 

She said the introduction of the Vehicle Targeting System at the Lebombo Port of Entry had significantly improved the detection of stolen vehicles, smuggling activities and other illicit cross-border crimes.

Joint operations involving the Border Management Authority, SAPS, the SANDF, Sars customs and other departments were also continuing to enhance border security.

Mosikili said 93 joint border law enforcement operations were conducted in June, and a further 81 in July. “These operations continue to produce positive results.” 

She said as of 3 August the government had repatriated 77,184 undocumented foreign nationals to various countries. Between 1 April and 31 July about 18,816 people were formally deported, while 3,016 undocumented foreign nationals were awaiting deportation at the Lindela repatriation centre.

Mosikili said the repatriation centre in Musina was now being demobilised.

“We have begun demobilising the repatriation centre in Musina following the successful processing and repatriation of thousands of undocumented foreign nationals. Just over 500 individuals remain at the centre and will be repatriated to their respective countries in the coming days.”

She also raised concern over videos circulating on social media that falsely suggest certain criminal incidents are linked to anti-illegal immigration campaigns. 

Mosikili urged all foreign nationals living in South Africa to ensure they are properly documented and comply with all immigration and other applicable laws.
