High school learners invited to create SA’s first space mascot─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:08 Fri, 21 Aug 2026
The South African National Space Agency (Sansa) has launched a national competition challenging high school learners to design the country’s first official space mascot.
The initiative aims to get young South Africans excited about the space sector, encourage careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and create a recognisable symbol for the country’s growing role in space.
The competition is open to learners in Grades 8 to 11 at registered public, independent and home schools across South Africa.
Entrants must submit an original mascot design, accompanied by a short written explanation, through Sansa’s official online competition portal by midnight on Monday, 14 September.
“This campaign really is an initiative by Sansa to try and include the South African youth and learners to participate in this growing and exciting sector,” said Sansa communications practitioner Daleen Fouché.
“We have a very proud heritage in space, starting with our facility in Hermanus, which has been taking magnetic observations for over 85 years.
“The agency wants learners to recognise heritage and understand they too have a place in the industry. We also participated in the early exploration of deep space during the Apollo missions,” she said.

The Grade 8 to 11 target group was selected because it is an important period when young people begin making decisions about their future careers.
Sansa is encouraging learners to consider Stem subjects, which are critical to the space industry. However, Fouché emphasised opportunities extend far beyond becoming an astronaut.
“We need scientists, engineers and computer scientists. These are people who are going to build the future of our space industry.”
“The sector also needs lawyers specialising in space law, marketers, communicators, artists and other professionals.”
Sansa’s programmes, including school outreach initiatives, teacher education, bursaries and internships, are also aimed at developing a pipeline of young talent. These initiatives help learners discover career opportunities, including remote sensing and geographic information systems, where satellite data is used to solve problems on Earth.
The winning mascot will be professionally developed and used at schools, youth outreach events, and public engagements across the country.
‘The winning school will receive R60,000’
The winning learner will receive R3,000, a Sansa merchandise hamper, and a certificate signed by the CEO, while the second- and third-place learners will receive R2,000 and R1,500 respectively.
The winning school will receive R60,000, the second-place school R25,000, and the third-place school R15,000 in cash or educational vouchers.
Learners can enter through the official competition portal.
