Provincial department of agriculture and rural development spokesperson Emelda Setlhako says the new packhouse at Matlabane Stud Farm outside Bloemhof is a strategic investment that will operate in the Lekwa-Teemane area. It will help farmers strengthen agricultural production and improve market access for emerging farmers in the area.

“The significance is that it will assist farmers to strengthen agricultural production and improve market access for emerging farmers within the area. This will stimulate local economic growth.”

The facility forms part of the department’s commitment to transform the agricultural sector.

This will benefit farmers by enabling them to supply or sell products that meet market demand and comply with required standards.

“The packhouse will support farmers by aligning with the requirements of South Africa’s Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training programme. The programme emphasises food safety, quality assurance, sound agricultural practice, and proper handling of produce.”

Farmers will be empowered to handle their produce in line with market requirements. “We expect more temporary workers to assist with cleaning and packaging when farmers deliver their produce,” she said.

Currently, 26 workers are employed on the farm, and the packhouse is still being established. 

She added that challenges facing the enterprise include climate variability and extreme weather events, heat waves affecting rainfall, and the need for improved irrigation infrastructure.

The facility will help ensure that produce is kept in the secure, safe environment required. “The department’s mandate is to ensure farmers receive continuous support,” she said.

She added that the department will continue working to ensure farmers benefit from available grants, with the aim of reaching more producers and helping them bring their crops to market safely and efficiently.
