A search is underway for an offender who escaped from Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre near Mahikeng in North West.

Edward Khomotso Madiba was detained in a single cell on a further charge related to a previous escape after he allegedly broke out of the correctional centre on Sunday (6/9), said department of correctional services (DCS) spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

Madiba is serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping, and parole violation.

Custody

“Preliminary information indicates Madiba cut through the burglar-bar door of the single cells. DCS has activated its security detail and is working with other law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the escapee as a matter of urgency. All necessary measures are being implemented to ensure he is traced and brought back into custody.”

Nxumalo said eight officials had been served with notices of contemplation of suspension pending the outcome of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.

DCS has appealed to members of the public to immediately alert law enforcement should they have any information that could assist in establishing Madiba’s whereabouts.

The department has also instituted a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape, including security measures at the facility. Nxumalo said the investigation would establish how Madiba escaped and determine whether any negligence or breach of security contributed to the incident.

DCS said its security detail was working with other law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the escapee. Members of the public are urged not to approach Madiba if they encounter him, but to immediately alert the police or other law enforcement agencies.
