The Free State department of health says it is following up with a small number of close contacts, with assessments and testing underway after the first case of Mpox was reported in Sasolburg.

The department says it is continuing to monitor the Mpox situation in Sasolburg following one laboratory-confirmed case and two additional probable cases. Contact tracing, testing and enhanced surveillance are ongoing to identify possible infections and prevent further transmission.

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant for symptoms, seek medical advice if they suspect an infection, and follow public health guidance while investigations continue.

Mpox is a viral infection that can affect anyone and is primarily transmitted through close physical contact with an infected person. It can also spread through contact with contaminated materials, including bedding, clothing and towels.

Symptoms may include fever, swollen glands, headaches, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, chills, a sore throat and mouth ulcers.

A characteristic rash or skin lesions may develop on the face, hands, feet, palms, soles, genitals or other parts of the body.

“The individual is clinically stable, isolated at home and receives appropriate care,” said Free State health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi. “At this time, the risk to the general public is considered low, and there is no evidence of widespread community transmission.

“If anyone develops symptoms, please seek advice from your nearest health facility, avoid close physical contact, including sexual contact, until assessed, do not share bedding, towels, clothing or utensils; keep any lesions covered, and practice regular hand hygiene.

“Mpox can affect anyone. The department calls for community support, the avoidance of stigma and respect for privacy. The situation is under control, and all necessary measures are being implemented. Further updates will be provided as needed.”

In September, the national department of health reported that the national number of confirmed cases had increased from 18 to 22. The updated tally included a man, 47, from Cape Town who had travelled to Spain earlier that month. His case was initially classified as probable while laboratory results were awaited from Spanish health authorities, before being confirmed and added to the national total.

The three additional cases reported at the time included infections involving German and Norwegian citizens. Of the 22 confirmed cases, 18 were recorded in the Western Cape, three in Gauteng, and one in KwaZulu-Natal. All but one of the patients were male, with those affected ranging in age from 23 to 50.
