The Windies beat South Africa by 17 runs in the first Twenty20 International at Kensington Oval in Barbados to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series on Monday.

Windies, who won the toss and chose to bat, finished with 124/6 in their 20 overs. Natasha McLean top-scored with 38 while Deandra Dottin made 22. Wicket-keeper batter Merissa Aguilleira and Kycia Knight remained unbeaten on 14 each and took their team's score past 100.

Zintle Mali and Saarah Smith picked up two wickets each for South Africa while Tumi Sekhukhune and Marizanne Kapp returned one wicket apiece.

It was a stuttering innings from the Windies, where they lost wickets at regular intervals – the highest partnership in the innings was 28 between McLean and captain Stafanie Taylor (9).

In reply, South Africa were restricted to 107/7 courtesy a three-wicket-haul by Taylor and two wickets from Afy Fletcher.

The visitors got off to a disastrous start, losing openers Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt inside the first four overs to be reduced to 14/2. Robyn Searle and Mignon du Preez added 17 runs for the third wicket before Searle was run out.

Du Preez followed soon after, caught by Aguilleira off Fletcher, to make it 49/4. When captain Chloe Tryon departed for 23 off 16, after looking threatening with two fours and six in her short stay at the crease, South Africa were in trouble at 66/5.

Marizanne Kapp and Faye Tunnicliffe then added 40 runs for the sixth wicket, but it was too late by the time Tunnicliffe was dismissed in the final over, as South Africa were left to get 19 runs off the last two balls.
