Russell leads Mercedes one-two in Australian Grand Prix season opener─── MORGAN PIEK 10:32 Sun, 08 Mar 2026
The 2026 Formula One season roared into life on Sunday as the Australian Grand Prix delivered an early statement of intent from George Russell and Mercedes at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit.
Russell converted pole position into a commanding victory to secure the first win of the new campaign, leading home an impressive Mercedes one-two finish in the opening race of the year. The British driver controlled proceedings from the front for much of the race.
He eventually crossed the line ahead of his rookie teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who produced a calm and assured performance to claim second place in what is his debut season with the team.

Scuderia Ferrari showed promising pace throughout the race, with Charles Leclerc briefly taking the lead during the early stages. However, a crucial tyre decision during a Virtual Safety Car period swung the momentum back in Mercedes’ favour.
Leclerc eventually settled for third place, with his teammate Lewis Hamilton bringing his Ferrari home in fourth.
Lando Norris secured fifth for McLaren, while reigning champion Max Verstappen produced one of the drives of the day. The Red Bull Racing driver started from the back of the grid following a difficult qualifying session, but fought his way through the field with determination to finish sixth.
The race, however, proved a bitter disappointment for home favourite Oscar Piastri. The Australian’s hopes of competing in front of his home crowd were dashed when he crashed on the formation lap, bringing his race to an abrupt end before the lights had even gone out.
For Russell, the victory marked the sixth win of his Formula One career and his first triumph in Melbourne. It also provided an early boost for Mercedes as the championship began under the sport’s new 2026 technical regulations.
“I’m feeling incredible – it was a hell of a fight at the beginning,” said Russell.

“We knew it was going to be challenging. I got on the grid, saw my battery level had nothing in the tank, made a bad start, and then obviously had some really tight battles with Charles, so I was really glad to cross the finish line.
“Honestly, thank you so much to the whole team because it’s been a long time coming to have this car beneath us, and we couldn’t start the season in a better way.”
With a dominant performance in the opening round and a one-two finish to their name, Mercedes have laid down an early marker in what promises to be a fiercely contested season. Ferrari showed encouraging pace but were ultimately undone by strategy, while Verstappen’s remarkable recovery drive hinted that the former champion will remain a major factor as the campaign unfolds.
