ICC sanctions Prince and Verreynne following CT Test incident─── MORGAN PIEK 08:05 Thu, 05 Nov 2026
South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince and wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne have been officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council following an incident on the third day of the third Test against Australia in Cape Town.
Both were found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, specifically Article 2.8, which relates to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.
The incident occurred during South Africa’s second innings following the dismissal of opener Marques Ackerman. The batter attempted to review the decision after being given out caught, but the umpires ruled that the request had not been made within the stipulated 15-second time limit.

The decision sparked frustration in the South African camp, with Prince making his feelings known to the officials. As Ackerman made his way towards the boundary, the batting coach repeatedly argued that there was still sufficient time for the review to be considered.
Verreynne, who was not part of South Africa’s playing XI, also became involved by calling on Ackerman to remain inside the boundary, delaying his departure from the field.
Although the incident did not escalate beyond the exchange with the officials, the actions of both individuals were deemed to have crossed the line under the ICC's disciplinary regulations.

The 15-second review window is an important part of the Decision Review System (DRS), with batters required to make their decision promptly after being given out. Once that period has elapsed, the on-field decision stands and the opportunity to challenge it is lost.
Both Prince and Verreynne admitted to the charges and accepted the proposed sanctions handed down by Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Consequently, no formal disciplinary hearings were required.
Each has received an official reprimand and one demerit point on their disciplinary record. These were their first offences within a 24-month period.

The charges were laid by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Chris Gaffaney, and fourth umpire Lubabalo Gcuma.
Under the ICC's disciplinary framework, Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum sanction of 50% of a player's match fee, together with one or two demerit points.
While the sanctions are relatively minor, the incident serves as a reminder that players and support personnel are expected to respect the decisions of match officials, even in moments of frustration during high-pressure international encounters.
