The EFF's president, Julius Malema, has described the plans the Free State African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) had to burn the investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh’s book, titled ‘Gangster State' as anti-intellectual.

Malema says despite how strong they may disagree with Myburgh, the plan to burn the book (‘Gangster State: Unravelling Ace Magashule’s web of capture’,) is thuggish and unacceptable. He says burning the book implies that all ‘capitalists’ books must be burned because they do not agree with them. He says, however, in order to understand the conduct and where they come from one need to read their books to understand their background.

OFM News previously reported that the Youth League in the FS made a U-turn on its earlier plans to burn Myburgh’s book at the Mangaung dumping site in the south on 15 April 2019 at 17h00.

The youth league’s spokesperson, Sello Peterson, told OFM News that after an engagement with the leadership of the ANC, the youth league was convinced not to proceed with their plans to burn the book. Malema says there was once a book written about him which has never encouraged the burning of the book.

Malema touched on the party's election preparations and responded to allegations of financial mismanagement made by party member Thembinkosi Rawula. Rawula claims the EFF benefitted from the looting of VBS Bank - despite denials from the leadership.
