With the country observing the 2019 National Child Protection Week, issues pertaining to child neglect, abuse and child-headed households, as well as other issues that continue to place children at the receiving end, are put to the forefront.
The week, aimed at raising awareness about children’s rights as stipulated in the Bill of Rights and the Children’s Act of 2005, this year comes at a time when the country is reeling from reports about children murdered by their own parents.
On-going police investigations about a 24-year-old mother who allegedly poisoned her four children in December 2018 and a 29-year-old father who last week killed three children and then committed suicide in Soshanguve has sent shock waves across the country with many raising concerns over children’s lack of safety and the abuse they experience at the hands of their abuser who in some instances are their parents.
